Dental SEO vs. Facebook ads: which to start with?
Dentists ask us this all the time: should we invest in SEO or in Facebook ads? The honest answer is that they do different jobs. Once you see what each one does, the choice gets easier.
What each one does
Local SEO helps your practice show up in Google’s map results and search listings when people nearby look for a dentist. These people are already searching, so they are close to booking.
Facebook and Instagram ads put an offer in front of local people while they scroll. These people are not searching yet. The ad creates the interest.
Put simply: SEO catches demand that already exists. Ads create demand and reach people earlier.
Speed
Ads usually move faster. Once campaigns are built and tested, inquiries can start within weeks. Local SEO takes longer, because Google needs consistent signals before it ranks you higher. Profile fixes can show up sooner, but expect months for ranking gains.
Cost structure
With ads, you pay for every impression or click. When you stop paying, the inquiries stop. With Local SEO, you pay for the work, not for each visitor. The visibility keeps working after the work is done, as long as you keep the foundation healthy.
This is why many practices treat SEO as a lasting asset and ads as a lever they can turn up when they need more patients.
Control
Ads give you more control over timing and volume. Want more implant consults this quarter? Run an implant offer and set a budget. SEO gives you less direct control over when visibility changes, but it builds a base that does not depend on a monthly ad budget.
How to choose
Use this as a rough guide:
| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| New practice, nobody knows you yet | Meta Ads, plus a fixed-up Google Business Profile |
| Established practice, steady but flat | Local SEO, to improve map visibility |
| Open chair time you want to fill soon | Meta Ads |
| Strong competitors outrank you on the map | Local SEO |
| Specific service to promote (implants, aligners) | Meta Ads, supported by a dedicated service page |
| Want long-term, lower-cost visibility | Local SEO |
If you can afford both, many practices run them together. SEO captures people searching today, and ads reach the people who will search later.
The thing both depend on
Neither channel works well if the basics are broken. Before you spend on either, check:
- Your Google Business Profile is complete and accurate.
- Your website loads fast on a phone and has clear pages for your main services.
- You have a way to track calls and forms.
- Your front desk answers quickly and offers a time.
If these are weak, fix them first. Otherwise you pay to send people to a practice that loses them.
What results to expect
Nobody can honestly promise a number of patients. Results depend on your market, your budget, your offer and how your team follows up. Be wary of any provider who guarantees a specific number before looking at your practice.
